I think people these days are more aware of the needs of the disabled. Back when I was little, ramps and toilets specially for the disabled may not be a norm but it is these days. But are those really enough? NMEDA (The National Mobility Equipment Dealers Association) is actually a non-profit trade association that educates consumers on buying equipments for the disabled from a NMEDA qualified dealer.
Not all disabled people have the same needs which is why a personalized "in-person" evaluation can ensure that you are getting the right driving solution customized to your specific needs. NMEDA dealers are there to help you if you need additional training or product refinements. NMEDA has BOTH dealers and Quality Assurance Program (QAP) dealers. The QAP is the only nationally recognized accreditation program for the adaptive mobility equipment industry.
If you were to ask me now where you could purchase a wheelchair or special equipments for the disabled i don't think i can give you a shop to get it off the top of my head. Which is why a NMEDA dealer would be very helpful if you have a disabled or an elderly loved one.Unfortunately, i can't find a qualified dealer near my location. But you could find out for yourself whether there is a dealer near you from the dealer locator link on the NMEDA website. Why don't you give it a try and let me know? :)
