Great American Cook Off

Have you heard of the Great American cook off ? If not, why not visit this link right here : http://www.greatamericanseafoodcookoff.com/ where they are currently holding the 2008 Great American Cook Off.

They have named chefs with five dishes as the finalists. For the contest, all 5 finalists had to come up with a dish each and the dishes have to contain at least one mystery ingredient which could either be Southwest Airline Peanuts or select brews from Michelob Brewing Co. And the dish has to represent all 5 food groups and must be easy enough for a home chef.

Among the 5 finalist dishes, my favourite will have to be the Louisiana Shrimp and Andouille Cassoulet by Chef Brian Landry from Louisiana. I love it cause i love shrimps and i feel that the recipe is easy enough to cook for such a succulent and gourmet dish. And the ingredients used are quite commonly found like celery, onion, shrimps of course and various herbs like thyme and oregano. I think this recipe is the simplest among the 5 as it requires less steps to prepare. It is a balanced dish too as it contains vegetables, meat, and carbohydrates in the form of bread.

In making great seafood dishes, it is important to use local seafood as local seafood ensures its freshness and of course its cheaper than imported ones. Dishes made from fresh seafood is always the best! No doubt about it. If you have some free time to spare, go to the website and vote for your favourite recipe. Who knows you might even win a trip to New Orleans in the process

Toy & Anime Convention

Went to The Spring for the so called Toy & Anime convention ...

what we saw were merely 2 small anime booths and one larger display of soft toys and other types of toys in the center court... and a track for racing toy cars (???) and an area confined for some laser shooting kinda game....

basically...to call it a convention is an overstatement!!!

but of course we spent some time goofing around with the toys and taking pics...

star wars figurines based on the new animated movie...

and the anime display casing...

nah!!....for you guys to drool on...pls excuse my reflection 'x'

while i was taking the pics of the anime figurines, a group of ah lian school going girls were talking loudly among themslves in hokkien right beside me (AS IF I AM DEAF ISIT???)

girl 1 : EH SAI HIP SIO ENG MEH? (are we allowed to take pictures?)
girl 2 : BEI CAI LE (i dont know le)
HIP LAI CO SIMIK???? (for what purpose???)

HELLO!!! never heard of blogs and bloggers isit?????
i looked at them and they just walked away =_=

see??? i know star wars...

p/s pls forgive me for the super grainy pics...i was half hoping that there's some problem with my camera and i could get an excuse to buy a new compact 'x'
but i just checked it just now and found out that i've accidentally set the ISO to the highest =_=

Black n White Choco Cheesecake

Wanted to finish up the cocoa powder from my previous bake...so i decided to make the Black n White Choco Cheesecake

ta daa....

hehehe doesnt look that pretty...cos the layers are not that defined...

i should not have hv used such a big tray...the recipe book cheated me!
oh well, i think you can never trust the recipe book too much

the bottom layer is the chocolate crust followed by cheese-chocolate and topped with cheese again

certainly more room for improvement...

Shanghai Renjia Part II

Went to Shanghai Renjia again ....

this time i managed to get a shot of the interior =)

classical oriental touch rite?

this time we had Sweet and Sour Pork Rib noodles (RM4.50)

to be perfectly honest...i really hate this!!!
the pork rib was too dry and hard...and the thing that annoyed me most was that, the pork ribs had tiny little pieces of bone which you wouldnt know its there until you bite into it....HARD!

dont like!

next!!!

Shanghai fried dumplings... (RM4?)

I think this was the best we've had that day...juicy meat in crunchy dumpling skin

and we were recommended with something something something...

i have forgotten the chinese name 'x'

from what i remember...the little buns look steamed on top but fried at the bottom...

see?

i like the crispy texture of the bottom but i didnt really like the filling...
reminds me very much of char siew pau

and of cos Xiao Lung Bao

for some reason or another....the xiao lung baos this time were very much different from the ones we had previously...

it's bigger and as you can see...there are holes on top for you to suck out the juicy porky goodness =)

after a while the juice tasted a little too 'porky' for me tho....LOL...

Are you nuts???

Are You Normal or Nuts? Come on, i think every normal person would have ever pondered on this question at least once if not more! If you have some weird quirks which you just cannot stop doing even though you cannot understand why you want to do it...the thing is, you are not alone.

Read this article by Reader's Digest: http://www.rd.com/advice-and-know-how/normal-or-nuts/article81525.html and you would know what i meant. The article is about quirks which you find worrisome. I read the article and found a few real quirks which was actually submitted by readers. Some of my favourites include this person who cannot eat certain big or tricky-to-eat things in front of people or how about this person who tries to avoid stepping on cracks between tiles...hehe i think i sometimes do that too =x

In fact, i used to have this quirk which annoyed even me last time. I like to touch the corners of everything...if there's a book i like to touch the 4 corners of the book and if i walk pass the tables...i like to just give the edge of the table a soft brush. I have forgotten about this little quirk of mine until i read this article....hehe pheww...i guess i am not a nut case after all!

Go and read the Are You Normal or Nuts? article...do you have quirks of your own? Share 'em! =)

Fat Cat

I was late for my gym class just now...hurriedly parked my car...

grabbed my bag and as i was about to climb up the stairs...i saw someone staring at me with BIGGGG green eyes...

like this...

i looked at it and i looked at my watch...

oh what the heck..i was already late...

took out my phone and snapped a photo of the sour faced FAT CAT...can u see how FAT it is???

why so glum??? who owe u money??

A Penny a Day

Now more than ever, after the recent fuel price hike...we now have even more reasons to save money. No matter how small the amount saved, it will sooner or later accumulate to be something. Few years ago, i have to admit that i was having problems saving money cos i was too busy enjoying every single cent of the money i earned. I spend without thinking and at the end, i ended up with not much savings in my bank account :(

Only in recent years, i finally disciplined myself and managed to save more than i have ever saved before! I am certainly proud of myself :) There are many ways like cutting back on nights out, and only buying really really necessary things. You know how we women are, there is just that one pair of shoe we must have, that dress and the list goes on and on.

For_opportunities

So i try not to make a purchase the first time i see something i like in the mall, i go home, ponder upon it and if i find that i still like it after a few days, i go back and buy it. Of course this will involve a few trips to the mall, much to the annoyance of my boyfriend..haha

Kuching Fest 2008 (Part I)

It's Kuching Fest season again!

It was a last minute decision to go there as my weekly monday night meeting was cancelled...WOOT to that

the usual crowds were there...and the usual stuff were there...like this fried ice cream

Selling at RM1.70 a piece...i just had to make it a point to try it at least once every year...

it is not super duperly nice...but the fact that its a FRIED...ICE CREAM just really attracts me...cos it beats me how they manage to fry something that melts so easily like ice cream...

and of cos the taiwan sausage...

i had wasabi flavored pork sausage at RM2 a piece...

and lookie here...

bwahahaaha....eh?coincidentally that's how spongebob laughs too...

my very own helium filled floating spongebob...me likey! :)

i had my very own helium filled balloon too last year..and believe me you, it is harder than it looks to be an adult carrying a helium filled balloon to the car among the crowds...i kept telling myself im almost there ....almoooooost there...

oh..its RM8 per spongebob 'x'

p/s apologies for the high noise level photos...it makes my post so blah...sigh

The Mystery behind Choon Hui Cafe

If you drive pass the old-wooden-house-turned-coffeeshop place beside Grand Cont Hotel..you will notice that there's always a loooong row of cars parked on the yellow line..(yes and risking a summon from the big guy in white, not santa claus!) every morning!

every single morning...

i've heard ppl telling me that their laksa is super good but when we drive pass the place and saw that it's fully packed...we always turned away...

so last saturday i decided that enough was enough...i want to try out this place and see what's the big deal all about!

the place was fully packed...as usual...

i had poh piah

well, this was surprisingly good cos i love my poh piahs with plenty of sweet crunchy peanuts...but on the whole ...i think it was just ok lah...i wont risk getting a summon by going back there for this...

and he had laksa...

when it came...i was like HUH??? this is the famous laksa that drew people here every morning and even Anthony Bourdain???

cos it was nothing to shout about!!! nothing!!! the soup was watery and the prawns were puny

and the kaya toast...it was even more nothing to shout about, so much so that i cant even bother to hold my hands steady to take this shot 'x' (bah! excuses)

did i go there at a bad time? or isit always this bad?

someone pls tell me...cos i cannot understand why are they fully packed every morning!
