Currently the bone marrow and the umbilical cord blood are the 2 most studied adult stem cells. Extraction of stem cells from the bone marrow can be painful whereas the umbilical cord blood could only be extracted during birth.
Collection of stem cells from menstrual blood however can be not painful and usually non-intrusive. In the research where in vitro stroke model of oxygen glucose deprivation (OGD) were used and found that OGD-exposed rat neurons that were co-cultured with menstrual blood-derived stem cells exhibited significantly low cell deaths.
